Multiple Disabilities Parent Support Group at Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit

This support groups was started this year to address the concerns of parents who have children with multiple physical disabilities. The group is held on a monthly basis and is facilitated by a social worker and a speech therapist from CLIU#21. Groups are held at the main office of CLIU#21 in Schnecksville are are offered during the day and in the evening. There is no charge to participate. Since the group has formed, various topics have been presented by guest speakers. Some topics include Communicating with Your Child, Creating Your Child's Own Sensory Bin, Fun with Computers, and Safe Feeding Practices. Groups also focus on informal information sharing as well as developing a support network for parents. Next school year's topics will be determine by the needs of the group members. Newcomer Orientation--this information session is the first step for all cancer patients and caregivers who are interested in joining one of the support groups. It provides an opportunity for individuals with cancer, family members and friends to learn more about The Wellness Community and the programs and services that are offered. These weekly meetings, led by cancer survivors who have participated in their own fight for recovery, offer newcomers a chance to explore these various methods used to fight for recovery, maintain hope and improve the quality of their lives.
Fighting For Cancer Together--on-going, professionally facilitated support groups for people with cancer and/or support persons are the heart of the program. Adult group members of different ages and with different types of cancer come together each week to get support and learn from each other.
Cancer Patient Participant Support Groups--weekly groups, facilitated by a licensed therapist, offer people with cancer an opportunity to share thoughts, feelings and information.
Family/Caregiver Support Groups--weekly groups, facilitated by a licensed therapist, offer those supporting a person with cancer the opportunity to learn new ways to deal with their individual stress and concerns, and also new ways to support their loved ones living with cancer.
