GIS (Geographic Information System) is a broad term that can refer to a number of different technologies, processes, and methods. It is attached to many operations and has many applications related to engineering, planning, management, transport/logistics, insurance, telecommunications, and business.
The Lehigh County GIS Office (LCGIS), formerly the "Mapping Department", started in 2000 as part of the Assessment office. The initial role of the GIS office was to maintain the county's parcel layer for the Assessment office. Since then GIS has come to support several offices in decision and policy making, and has become an integral part of the Recorder's office, certifying the Universal Parcel Identifier (UPI) used in tracking legally recorded documents such as deeds, mortgages, easements, and mortgage satisfactions.
